Prof. Wen Gao is with the Peking University as professor from 2006.He is working in the areas of multimedia and computer vision, including video coding, video analysis, multimedia retrieval, face recognition, and multimodal interface. He served or serves on the editorial board for several journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, IEEE Transactions on Autonomous Mental Development, EURASIP Journal of Image Communications, Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation. He is a fellow of IEEE, a fellow of ACM, and a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
He is currently the Chairman of Audio Video coding Standard (AVS) working group in China. AVS video part has published as the national standard GB/T 20090.2 in March 2006, and other four parts also have published since then, including part of audio, system, and conformance testing. From 2012, Prof. Gao is severed as the chair of IEEE Audio and Video System (AVS) standard working group, which is a new standard working force in IEEE standard society for internet multimedia coding. Two parts of standard have published as IEEE standard in 2013, and the third part is scheduling to be published in 2014.

NELVT(National Engineering Laboratory for Video Technology) plays the leading role to organize, research and establish the Chinese video coding standard. And it also is a active participant of the establishment of international video coding standard. The main goal of this Lab is to research the leading-edge video coding technology and the advanced video system technology.
Aims at digital video coding technology and video system technology, the Laboratory has set up the researching and testing platform to research video coding algorithm, video coding system, new media application, media SoC technology and video testing technology, also has set up video and audio synchronization and integration framework and testing methodology.
For the requirements of the video and audio industry, the goal of the laboratory is to research and establish kernel product development platform, digital video processing and testing platform, basis system and application demonstration platform, multimedia communication and verification platform. Based on these research and development platform, NELVT drives the video processing cutting-edge application techniques in collaboration with outstanding corporations, institutes and universities.
With the support of the AVS standard workgroup, NELVT has established Chinese proprietary intellectual property rights mechanism of innovation for video and audio processing, has built up video and audio processing and application technology ecosystem, and has provided the kernel video techniques for Chinese digital television, multimedia communication, consumer electronics and network, etc.
