Lab Director (or Principal Investigator)

Prof. Feng Tong received the Ph.D and M.S. degrees in underwater acoustics from the Xiamen University, China in 1997 and 2000 respectively, and the B.E in geotechnical engineering from Wuhan University of Technology, China in 1994. From 2000 to 2002, he worked as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Radio Engineering, Southeast University, China. Since 2003, he has been a research associate at the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management, City University of Hong Kong for one and a half year. From Dec 2009 to Dec 2010 He was a visiting scholar in Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of California San Diego, USA. Currently he is a professor and department associate head with the Department of Applied Marine Physics and Engineering, Xiamen University, China. His research interests focus on acoustic signal processing, noise robust signal processing and underwater acoustic communication system. He is a member of IEEE, ASC (Acoustical Society of China) and CSIS (China Ship Instrument Society). He serves as vice chair of the IEEE Computation Intelligence Society Xiamen Chapter, and on the editorial board for the Springer journal: Journal of Marine Science and Application.

Lab Introduction

The acoustic signal and speech processing lab (ASSPL) of Xiamen University (XMU) currently includes three professors and more than fifteen graduate students. The research directions of ASSPL focus on environment (noise, channel) robust speech signal processing, R&D of speaker recognition and embedded speech recognition systems. Since 2005, ASSPL has conducted more than ten national-funded projects, obtained eight patents and published more than twenty journal papers in SCI journals. Specially, environmental robust speech signal processing technologies of ASSPL have found extensive practical applications, including intelligent robot, intelligent mobile and telecommunication. The developed embedded speech recognition chip has been applied into more than one hundred thousand robot toys. And the speaker recognition mobile software has also been downloaded more than one hundred thousand times.
