Lab Director (or Principal Investigator)

Jian-Huang Lai received his M.Sc. degree in applied mathematics in 1989 and his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1999 from Yat-sen University University, China. He joined Sun Yat-sen University in 1989 as an Assistant Professor, where currently he is a Professor with the Department of Automation of School of Information Science and Technology and dean of School of Information Science and Technology. His current research interests are in the areas of digital image processing, pattern recognition, multimedia communication, wavelet and its applications. He has published over 150 scientific papers in the international journals and conferences on image processing and pattern recognition, e.g. IEEE TPAMI, IEEE TKDE, IEEE TNN, IEEE TIP, IEEE TSMC (Part B), Pattern Recognition, ICCV, CVPR, IJCAI and ICDM. Prof. Lai serves as a standing member of the Image and Graphics Association of China and also serves as a standing director of the Image and Graphics Association of Guangdong.

Lab Introduction

The Video and Image Analysis and Machine Intelligence Group is now composed of 1 Professor, namely, Dr. Jian-Huang Lai, 3 Associate Professors, namely, Dr. Haifeng Hu, Dr. Huicheng Zheng, and Dr. Wei-Shi Zheng, 5 Ph.D. students, and 61 master students. The lab has established a cooperative relationship with several universities, research institutes, and companies. Our current research directions are listed as below:

1) Nonlinear data clustering and data mining.

We develop the multi-exemplar affinity propagation algorithm [1] and study the support vector based clustering methods [2,3]. We are also interested in community discovery in content-based networks [4].

2) Face recognition.

We are doing research in the small sample size problem of face recognition [5] and single image based face recognition [6]. Face hallucination is also one of our on-going research topics[7].

3) Video analysis.
The video analysis across multiple camera views is one of our main research topics. We investigate the problem of association of tracked pedestrians across multiple disjoint camera views [8,9]. We are also interested in the Kinect based applications and we have developed a 3-D auto dressing system based on Kinect.
