Lab Director (or Principal Investigator)

Prof. Dr. Xilin Chen, received the BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Computer Science from Harbin Institute of Technology, China, in 1988, 1991, and 1994 respectively. Then he joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Harbin Institute of Tehcnology, where he was a lecturer (1994), associate professor (1996), and professor (1999-2005) . He was a visiting scholar with Carnegie Mellon University from 2001 to 2004. He was elected into the 100 Talents Program of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and joined the Institute of Computing Technology, CAS in August, 2004. His research interests are Image Understanding, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, Image Processing, Multimodal Interface, and Digital Video Broadcasting. He has served as a program committee member for more than twenty International Conferences in these areas. He received several awards, including thrice of the China's State Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2000, 2003 and 2005 respectively, for his academic researches. He is the (co-)author of more than 100 papers.

Lab Introduction

Visual Information Processing and Learning (VIPL) group is affiliated with Institute of Computing Technology (ICT) Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It is one of the research groups of Key Laboratory on Intelligent Information Processing of CAS. VIPL is also part of the Joint R&D Laboratory (JDL). Currently, there are about 50 members in the group, including 2 professors, 3 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, 1 postdoc, and about 40 PhD candidates or Master students.
The research areas of VIPL group include Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning, Human-Computer Interaction, and Neural Computation. Researchers in the group have broad interest in these fields, and especially focus on face detection and recognition, visual modeling and recognition, visual perception and coding, gesture and sign language recognition, object detection and event analysis for intelligent video surveillance, and multimedia analysis/retrieval. Since 2000, we have published more than 150 research papers in these fields, among which more than 50 are published by international journals or top-level international conferences (ICCV/CVPR/ECCV). One of our CVPR2008 papers won "Best Student Poster Award Runner-up".
VIPL group not only seeks for high quality fundamental researches with high academic impact, but also pursues innovative technologies with wide potential applications that can improve the people's life. Therefore, besides R&D projects funded by the government, we are also sponsored by the industry. In the past decade, we have built broad collaborations with both domestic and international companies. As a results, many technologies from VIPL group, especially the face-related technologies, have been successfully converted to products or exloited to enhance existing systems.
