De-Nian Yang received the BS and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan University in 1999 and 2004, respectively, with Prof. Wanjiun Liao as the advisor. From 2004 to 2008, he was a postdoctoral fellow for the 4-year military services with Prof. Ming-Syan Chen as the advisor. He is now an associate research fellow in the Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica.

His research interests include multimedia and mobile networking, and social networks. He received the best student paper award of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (IEEE ICME), Emerging Technologies Prize in ACM SIGGRAPH Asia, Career Development Award in Academia Sinica, Outstanding Youth Electrical Engineer Award in Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineering, K. T. Li Distinguished Young Scholar Award, ACM Taipei/Taiwan Chapter, and Research Exploration Award in Pan Wen Yuan Foundation. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of ACM.

Lab Introduction

1. Multimedia and Mobile Networking
For multimedia and mobile networking, the research topics include multicast routing, network coding, resource planning, and cross-layer design with analysis. Research results have spanned various kinds of networks, such as heterogeneous wireless cellular networks, wireless mesh networks, peer-to-peer networks, satellite networks, Internet backbone, and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. Recently, we proposed a new 3D video multicast algorithm for LTE networks, a green relay selection algorithm with cooperative communications, and a multicast routing algorithm with network coding. We also designed and implemented a new approximation algorithm for mobile routing and a new video streaming framework for mobile handsets. The results have appeared in INFOCOM, ICNP, GLOBECOM, ICC, WCNC, VTC, ICME, MM, CHI, TMC, TMM, TWC, TKDE, TPDS, and TVT.

Also, the results have received Best Student Paper Award of IEEE ICME, ACM SIGGRAPH Asia Emerging Technologies Prize, Exploration Research Award in Pan Wen Yuan Foundation, and Career Development Award in Academia Sinica.

2. Social Networks and Mobile Data Management
The research topics for social networks include social influence propagation, query processing, privacy preserving, and viral marketing. We also proposed a distributed mining framework for sensor networks and considered uncertain query optimization for mobile environments. The results have appeared in VLDB, KDD, ICDM, CIKM, PAKDD, MDM, DASFAA, TKDE, and TMC.

Also, the results have been featured by MIT Technology Review, ACM TechNews, phys.org, ainstain.gr, popsci.com, inquisitr.com, gossipy.co, liveblogsworld.com, and article.wn.com, according to Google search. In addition, the results have received K. T. Li Distinguished Young Scholar Award in ACM Taipei/Taiwan Chapter and Project for Excellent Junior Research Investigators in NSC.
