Lab Introduction

The Human Language Technology (HLT) Department at Institute for Infocomm Research was founded in 2007 and led by Dr Haizhou Li and a group of renowned scientists, with a mission to advance the state-of-the-art technology to power the speech and language industry in Singapore. HLT Department is recognized internationally as a technology leader in speaker and language recognition, large vocabulary continuous speech recognition, machine translation, and spoken dialogue technology in the industry, as attested by its leadership in US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Speaker Recognition and Language Recognition Evaluations in the past years.
HLT Department at I2R is well connected with the industry. In recent years, it established research collaborations with multi-national companies such as Baidu, Sogou, Panasonic, and Microsoft Research Asia. In 2012, Baidu partnered with HLT Department to set up its first overseas joint laboratory, Baidu-I2R Research Center (BIRC), in Singapore. BIRC was known for its award-winning voiceprint technology, which was adopted by Lenovo A586 smartphone, the worldˇ¦s first voice-unlocking phone, in December 2012.
HLT Department is the organizer of Odyssey Speaker and Language Recognition Workshop 2012, and INTERSPEECH 2014.
